Spring Baseball

I hope you are looking forward to the upcoming spring baseball season!  From our 2019 survey, we heard from parents that “the selection process for leagues and teams was not clear”.  Seeing that league and team creation will take place over the next month, I wanted to send out a communication regarding this process as well as a general timeline for the spring season.

As a reminder, Reading Little League Baseball is a nonprofit organization, 100% run by volunteers dedicating their time to running and continuously enhancing our program.  A considerable amount of time and planning goes into creating leagues with the goal of fair and balanced play.

Timeline

  • Week of 3/23 – Indoor practices for Majors, Triple A, and Double A begin
  • Week of 3/30 – Outdoor practices for all leagues are scheduled to begin at the batting cages at the Birch Meadow complex

PLEASE NOTE: All outdoor field practices in early April are contingent on the Town of Reading granting access based on field and weather conditions.  If the town deems the fields not ready for use, these practices will be cancelled.

  • 4/25 – First games for the Majors Division and tentative Opening Day Event
  • Week of 4/26 – First games for all leagues
  • 6/8 – Playoffs begin
  • 6/20 or 6/21 – Championship games
  • Summer baseball – For those contemplating a highly competitive travel baseball team (ages 9-12 years old) this summer and are looking to plan summer vacations around this time, our best estimate at the schedule for these leagues is June 20 – August 16, with practices or games almost every day (RLL Baseball has no control over the game schedule of these leagues).  Please note that there will be additional summer leagues offered with fewer commitments and less travel.  Please plan vacation schedules accordingly if you believe your child may make a District or Baystate roster as teams may be penalized if rostered players are not present at games. The league will request vacation schedules before making roster decisions.

***Little league baseball is not based off of a child’s grade level in school.  It is based off the little league age chart (attached).  Please keep in mind that most players will spend three years at the AA and AAA levels before moving to Majors. Some will spend two years at the AA level; others will spend two years at the AAA level.  Also keep in mind that pitching in the Majors division can be as fast as 65mph with baseballs hit back to fielders reaching higher speeds.  Additionally, a parent can elect for their child to play in a lower level of little league for various reasons.***

Majors Division – This is the highest level of little league play

League Creation: Majors will be comprised of all 12-year-old players and a portion of 11-year-old players determined by a player rating.  The player rating is a combination of fall evaluation scores and the prior year coach’s assessment, with consideration given to the league played in the prior year.

Team Creation: A draft overseen by the Majors Division League Director will be held prior to the start of the season for coaches to select their teams.  The coaches will be provided with player ratings at the draft to create a league of balanced teams.

Triple A Division

League Creation: Triple A will be comprised of all 11-year-old players not playing in the Majors Division and a portion of 10-year-old players determined by their player rating.  The player rating is a combination of fall evaluation scores and the prior year coach’s assessment, with consideration given to the league played in the prior year.

Team Creation: A draft overseen by the Triple A League Director will be held prior to the start of the season for coaches to select their teams.  The coaches will be provided with player ratings at the draft to create a league of balanced teams.

Double A Division

League Creation: Double A will be comprised of all 10-year-old players not playing in the Triple A Division and all 9-year-old players.

Team Creation: A draft overseen by the Double A League Director will be held prior to the start of the season for coaches to select their teams.  The coaches will be provided with player ratings at the draft to create a league of balanced teams.  The player rating is a combination of fall evaluation scores and the prior year coach’s assessment, with consideration given to the league played in the prior year.

Single A Division

League Creation: Single A will be comprised of all 8-year-old players.

Team Creation: A draft overseen by the Single A League Director will be held prior to the start of the season for coaches to select their teams.  The coaches will be provided with player ratings at the draft from the prior year’s coach to create a league of balanced teams.

Rookie Division

League Creation: Rookie will be comprised of all 7-year-old players.

Team Creation: The Rookie League Director works with the Little League President to create balanced teams based on the parent’s player rating at registration.  Additionally, we strive to create teams with players from two (or three) elementary schools so that players can make friends with kids from other schools while ensuring that they know other players on their team at this young age.
